Storage Unit Organization Tips

Naming Conventions

Use clear, descriptive names:
  • Include temperature type: “Walk-in Cooler”, “Deep Freezer”
  • Include location: “Main Kitchen Pantry”, “Bar Refrigerator”
  • Be specific: “Prep Area Cooler” vs. just “Cooler”

Common Storage Types

  • Cold Storage: Walk-in coolers, reach-in refrigerators
  • Frozen Storage: Walk-in freezers, chest freezers
  • Dry Storage: Pantries, dry goods storage
  • Service Areas: Bar, coffee station
  • Prep Areas: Prep kitchen, baking area

Linking Ingredients to Storage

When managing ingredients, you can specify which storage unit they’re kept in:
  • Helps with inventory organization
  • Supports stock taking by location
  • Integrates with POS systems that track by location
See Ingredients for more on linking ingredients to storage units.

Integration with Sides POS

If you use Sides POS:
  • Storage units can be mapped to Sides stores/locations
  • Enables inventory sync between systems
  • Tracks ingredient usage by location
See Sides Integration for details.

Search and Filter

On the storage units page:
  • Search: Find storage units by name or address
  • Sort: Order by name, date created, etc.
  • Filter: If available, filter by type or status

Best Practices

  • Create all storage units upfront: Set up your full storage structure before adding ingredients
  • Use consistent naming: Make it easy for your team to identify locations
  • Include addresses: Especially useful for multi-location operations
  • Regular review: Periodically review and update storage unit information
  • Don’t delete in use: Verify storage unit isn’t linked to ingredients before deleting
